On Saturday, June 6, brothers and sisters from across Halifax gathered on the future home of the Sabeel Muslim Youth & Community Center to celebrate a historic milestone for the Muslim community. The gathering marked the official announcement that the City had issued the Development Permit for the Sabeel project, bringing the vision of a dedicated Muslim youth and community center one step closer to reality.
The event welcomed families, community leaders, and representatives from Muslim communities throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. A special highlight was the presence of Imams from the Imams Council of Nova Scotia and every mosques from across Halifax, reflecting the broad support and unity behind the project.
Community members came together on the land at 1024 St. Margaret’s Bay Road to witness this important moment, hear updates about the project, and share in the excitement of what lies ahead. The gathering featured the Adhan and Dhuhr prayer on the property, allowing attendees to experience firsthand the future home of a center that aims to serve generations to come.
The event was also attended by several elected officials and community stakeholders, including Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab. Their presence highlighted the significance of the project and the positive impact it is expected to have on the broader community.
Following the formal program and prayer, attendees enjoyed refreshments and had the opportunity to connect with one another, learn more about the project, and discuss the next steps in Sabeel’s journey.
The issuance of the Development Permit represents a major achievement after years of planning, fundraising, and community effort. The future Sabeel project is envisioned as a place of faith, education, youth development, recreation, and community service. It will provide a welcoming space where individuals and families can gather, learn, grow, and contribute to the well-being of the wider Halifax community.
As the project moves into its next phase, this gathering served as a reminder of what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared vision. With the support of volunteers, donors, community leaders, and families, Sabeel continues to build not only a facility, but a lasting legacy for future generations.
