Round Table Conference to fight Online Hate

Radicalized Canadians are almost THREE times more likely to have experienced harmful behaviour online while 58% of Women in Canada have been subjected to Online Hate. To address this alarming concern regarding Online Hate, the Government of Canada through the Ministry of Canadian Heritage organized a Round Table Conference lead by MP Fillmore to discuss ways to make online space safer for all individuals and come up with Policies for online media platforms to contain hateful content.

Sabeel was honoured to be a part of this roundtable conference as we brought up clear evidences and personal accounts of how online hate and Islamophobic content online transpires into hate motivated crimes while citing incidents that have occurred in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada. Joined by members from Law Enforcement and other backgrounds, members from Sabeel advocated for a system of measures to be put in place by online service providers to curb online hate while ensuring peoples right to Freedom of speech is not compromised.
